AI SEO agency: get cited inside
the answer, not ranked below it
A quarter of Google searches now open with a generated answer, and on those queries the classic first result loses around six clicks out of ten. The pages that survive are the ones cited inside the answer. That is what an AI SEO agency is for. This page explains how to choose one, what the work actually involves and how to measure it.
Get my free AI visibility audit →Your rankings did not move. Your traffic did.
This is the pattern we see on almost every site that comes to us: stable positions, stable impressions, falling clicks. Nothing broke. Something moved above you.
The answer arrives before your link
On 25% of queries, and 57% of informational ones, Google writes the answer at the top of the page. Your result is still there. It is just below the thing that already answered the question.
Being cited is now the dividing line
On the same query, a cited page keeps roughly double the click-through rate of an uncited one. The traffic did not vanish, it concentrated on whoever the model decided to reference.
You cannot see it in your analytics
Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions from normal ones. Most companies are losing this ground without a single metric telling them so. That blind spot is the real problem.
What is an AI SEO agency?
An AI SEO agency makes your business appear inside the answers generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, instead of only in the list of links underneath. The discipline also goes by GEO, for generative engine optimization, and AEO, for answer engine optimization. Different labels, same work: making your content extractable, verifiable and attributable by a language model. If you want the method itself rather than how to buy it, our GEO agency page covers it in depth.
How exposed are you? One minute to find out
Exposure depends on what kind of queries bring you traffic and how credible your pages look to a model. Four questions.

Question 1 / 4
AI SEO and traditional SEO, side by side
They share most of their foundations. What changes is what counts as winning.
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a list of blue links | A citation inside the generated answer |
| What gets optimized | The page | The passage, 40 to 90 words that stand alone |
| What decides the outcome | Authority and relevance of the page | Extractability, sourcing and named expertise |
| How you measure it | Position, clicks, impressions | Share of voice across tested prompts |
| Where the traffic goes | Straight to your site | To cited sources, or nowhere at all |
This is why we never sell the two separately. A page built to be cited is also a page built to rank.
How to choose an AI SEO agency
The category is new enough that anyone can claim it. Four questions separate the agencies doing the work from the ones repackaging a slide deck.
Ask how they measure AI visibility
This is the fastest way to separate real agencies from opportunists. An AI SEO agency that cannot tell you which prompts it tests, how often, and what your current share of voice is, is selling a promise it has no way of proving. Ask for the reporting template before you sign anything.
Check that they still do classic SEO
76% of pages cited in AI Overviews already rank in the top 10 for the same query. An agency that treats LLM optimization as a separate discipline from search is going to sell you a second contract for work that should be one. Our SEO agency and AI work run on the same roadmap for that reason.
Look at what they refuse to promise
Nobody controls what a model outputs. Any agency guaranteeing a citation in ChatGPT within 30 days is either misunderstanding the mechanism or counting on you not to check. Expect weeks to months, and expect an honest answer about it.
Ask who writes the content
Models cite sources with visible expertise: a named author, real credentials, cited data, a review date. An agency producing anonymous AI-generated filler is building exactly the kind of page that never gets cited. Ask to see three pages they wrote last month.
What our AI SEO services actually involve
Four stages, in this order. Measurement comes first and last, because an agency that cannot show movement is asking you to take its word for it.
AI visibility audit
We test 20 to 30 real prompts your buyers would type into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then record who gets cited, on which questions, and with which passage. You get a starting number instead of a hunch: your current share of voice, next to your competitors'.
Content restructuring
Your existing pages get rebuilt into self-contained passages a model can lift without context. Clear definitions, sourced figures, tables and question blocks. This is the single highest-impact lever, and it doubles as classic SEO copywriting work.
Authority and E-E-A-T signals
Named authors with real credentials, visible publication and review dates, primary sources, and brand mentions on third-party sites. This is the slowest lever and the most durable one, and it overlaps directly with link building.
Monthly measurement
The same prompts, re-tested every month. You see your share of voice move, which questions you won, and which competitor lost the slot. No vanity metrics: the report answers one question, are you cited more than last month.
What does not work, whatever you are told
Three things get sold as AI SEO services and produce nothing. Worth knowing before you pay for them.
Schema markup on its own
Structured data describes your content, it does not improve it. Adding FAQ markup to a thin page changes nothing. Necessary, nowhere near sufficient.
Publishing more words
The measured correlation between content length and citation is 0.04, which is none. Over half of cited pages run under 1 000 words. Volume is not the lever.
AI-generated content at scale
Models cite sources with demonstrable expertise. Anonymous generated filler is the exact opposite signal. Using AI to draft faster is fine; using it to replace expertise is why most sites never get cited.
What our clients say
"We started from zero in SEO. Within a few months, quote requests coming from Google became our top source of clients. The monthly check-in is crystal clear, so we always know exactly where we stand."
"What convinced me was the transparency. Every month I see exactly what's been done and what it delivers. Our trade show pages are now ranking on searches our competitors had dominated for years."
"Léo got our site technically sound before we even talked about content. Honest, clear, and above all effective: you understand what you're paying for, and the results follow."
"We'd already tried two SEO providers without seeing anything happen. Here, by the third month, our key strategic searches had already taken off. The reporting speaks business, not jargon."
"A real partner, not just a vendor. Léo challenges our briefs, brings up angles we hadn't considered, and the qualified traffic keeps coming. I recommend him without hesitation."
"We started from absolutely nothing: a brand-new site, zero visits. Within a year, we'd racked up 144,000 impressions and nearly 2,000 clicks, ranking on our flagship searches. For a niche store built from scratch, that's exactly what we were hoping for."

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI SEO agency?
An AI SEO agency makes your business appear inside the answers generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, rather than only in the classic list of links. The work is also called GEO, for generative engine optimization, or AEO, for answer engine optimization. In practice it means restructuring content so a model can extract and attribute it, strengthening expertise signals, and measuring how often you get cited.
How does AI SEO differ from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO wins a position and earns a click. AI SEO wins a citation inside a generated answer, and the click becomes optional. Traditional SEO optimizes the page; AI SEO optimizes the passage, typically 40 to 90 words that make sense on their own. The two share most of their foundations, which is why they should be run together rather than bought as separate contracts.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the discipline of getting your content cited by AI systems that generate answers instead of listing links. It covers content structure, source credibility, structured data and entity clarity. AI SEO and GEO describe the same work, with GEO being the more technical term and AI SEO the one buyers actually search for.
How do I optimize my website for AI search?
In order of impact: rank in the top 10 for your informational queries, since roughly three quarters of cited pages already do; break content into self-contained passages that answer one question each; add named authors, dates and primary sources; then add structured data. Markup alone changes nothing if the content underneath is not worth citing.
Is AI SEO worth it for small businesses?
Often more than for large ones. Most local and niche markets have no established source in AI answers yet, so the position is unclaimed. A smaller company that publishes genuinely useful, well-sourced content can become the cited reference on its topic before larger competitors start paying attention. The window is open now and will not stay open.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Expect weeks to a few months, depending on the query and your existing authority. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews pick up new credible sources relatively fast; ChatGPT is slower. A site with solid existing SEO moves considerably quicker, which is why we never treat AI visibility as separate from search fundamentals.
